The canyons and associated resources are especially sacred to the Indians today and are historically important to scientists and nature lovers. While you are in Palm Canyon, visit the Trading Post for hiking maps, refreshments, Indian art and artifacts, books, jewelry, pottery, baskets, weavings and conversational cultural lore.

Many of the trails are suitable for children and there are nature programs the whole family will be interested in. Choose from one of the canyons to spend a day in nature, or visit all three. There is an admission fee.
Palm Canyon is 15 miles long, and you will relish the peace and serenity of one of the great beauty spots in Western North America. As you hike, you’ll be thrilled with the stark beauty of California Fan palm trees set against stark, rocky gorges and barren desert lands. A moderately graded, paved foot path winds down into the canyon for picnicking near the stream, meditating, exploring, hiking or horseback riding.

If you like bird watching, you will enjoy the Andreas Canyon foot trail. You will marvel at the abundant plants and trees in this oasis. You’ll see magnificent fan palms and more than 150 species of plants within a half-mile radius in this lush oasis. As you stroll along the scenic foot trail winding deep into the canyon, you’ll pass groves of palms, unusual rock formations and the perennial Andreas Creek. This tranquil setting is excellent for photography, bird watching or a picnic at one of the tables along the trail.

From Andreas Canyon, strike out for Murray Canyon, an easy hike south. Foot and equestrian trails lead to beautiful recreation areas among the many palm trees. You might even catch a glimpse of the peninsula Big Horn Sheep, or other wild animals roaming the high ground above the canyon. More secluded, you have the chance to see animals and birds on the endangered list, such as the Least Bells Vireo bird, known to nest here.

Whatever your hiking ability, you and your family are sure to spend enjoyable, quiet hours exploring these ancient canyons. You’ll help your children discover that Nature offers some of the great adventures.
